In this week’s The Listening Post, Richard Gizbert puts Azerbaijan under the spotlight. Freedom of the press in the former Soviet republic has not moved on since pre-perestroika days. And with presidential elections on the horizon the government is cracking down further on journalists who refuse to tow the party line.

most of them hate Aliev. They had a nationalist president, but Haydar sold them out to the US and Iran in order to come to power. In terms of politics Azerbaijan is much closer to Iran then Turkey. Culturally its closer to Turkey. Business wise it has both Iranian and Turkish companies very active in Baku.

Please do not use our leaders name, you are sold out Azeri, you bring shame to his name. Gunaz tv. only tv. who stood up for south Azerbaijanis interest. Everytime we asked for our civil right we get labeled as pan turk!, now days it is Aliyev, Israel, America or Turkey who did it!!!. I gurantee you North Azerbaijan is going to be ten times more developed than south Azerbaijan in very short time, even with all that corruption. Iran is in stone age.

Also was funny that everyone in the South of Az watches Sahar TV. Your journalist didn’t ask people why they watch it!! I think he wouldn’t understand their answer.
Iran is light-years ahead of Azerbaijan in terms of politics, economics, and business. Your reporter should’ve mentioned how people in Azerbaijan outside of Baku live. Even in Baku; just compare it with Tehran and you’ll see a huge difference. And in Iran there’s a huge movement that pushing for more reform and change; just look at how much has changed in the last 10, 15 years. There’s nothing like that in Azerbaijan. The whole population is just Aliyev’s slaves.
I usually like watching the Listening post, but this was one of your worst programs. The problem in Azerbaijan is not that they’ve arrested 10 journalists; it’s that the Aliyev clan controls absolutely everything! business, politics, everything. But living there, I found it’s always been like that in Azerbaijan, also in Soviet times, and the people don’t know anything else.
And then your journalist with the Russian name says Iranians want more of this Azerbaijan??? You’re dreaming!!!

That u dont consider Reza baraheni an Azari leader is your personal problem. Ahmad Kasravi also considered Azaris as Iranians too. And Yahya Safavi (Pasdaran head), Parviz Fattah (current Oil minister), Parviz Davoudi (first vice prez), are all Azari. Even Khatami is half Azari. And btw, another lie of yours: Tabriz University does actually teach courses in Azari.

there are courses in Farsi,Arab,English,French and Armenian but not Turkish Azerbaijani.

Pahlavi’s were Fascist Fars, Reza shah suppressed Turkish language, he was put in Trone be British, not Turk. Azeri Turk people living in Iran are not 2 times of Azerbaijan republic population, but they are more that 3 times and around 30 million.
South azerbaijani do want seperated from Iran, and unite with north azerbaijan.

Right on. Very good topic to put some light on. Although the program contained some major mistakes (i.e. the exclusion of west Azerbaijan from the Iran’s Azeri area map). My recommendation: Stay away from talks about separatism and instead focus on Azeri people lives and violation of their basic rights in Iran. Reports on Azeri prisoners, on the lack of even one Azeri school in Iran and …. Thank you for being a voice for the Azeri people who are under sever cultural repression in Iran.

Idiots. Iranian Azeris dont want “independence”. When will you ever figure this out? Iran belongs to Azeris. It’s a country they helped form themselves (Pahlavis, Qajars, and Safavids were not Persians). They founded its constitution in 1907. Tehran has more Azeris in it than any other city in the world. Seek independence from whom? Yourself?!
