Climbing Volcan Pacaya

Near Guatemala City is the very active Volcano Pacaya. Tours leave daily from Antigua de Guatemala to climb the volcano and reach within inches of the lava flows. In some cases you can actually walk on top of very recent flows. Don’t melt your shoes! … Volcano Pacaya Guatemala Adventure nature sunset lava central america wanderlust backpacking travel Antigua

Yeah, I must admit it wasn’t the smartest thing we’ve done, but it was spectacular.

I just discovered your site and look forward to viewing (sharing) many more of your adventures. My wife and I (we’re 58) were in Central America 1.5 years ago and climbed the volcano, but during bright daylight (less contrast of the lava). One person put his walking stick in the ground and it caught on fire. Others who did not wear long pants suffered severe lacerations if they fell. Did you read the warning sign, only after climbing cautioning you not to continue due to poisonous gases? LOL

Hot stuff. You’d never be able to do that in the nanny states.
